Bio: I have been working as a technician at Soho since January 2008, and became a Certified Apple Technician in October of that year. I’ve always expressed an interest in technology in general, from tinkering with broken power tools to administration of complicated server software. My technical background was originally with Microsoft Windows, but he’s been proficient with the Mac OS X platform for roughly 3 years.…more>
Staff Picks:
On a day to day basis, I could not work nearly as proficiently without MobileMe. For only $100 a year, the benefit of data synchronization between my work terminal’s, personal MacBook Pro and iPhone is absolutely priceless. I strongly recommend MobileMe to anyone who needs access to their data and information.
For a networking and storage power house, I recommend the Time Capsule. I’ve only ever owned Notebook Mac’s, and the ability to perform wireless backups is amazing. The network range and fidelity is incredible, and a secondary hard disk or printer can be attached for wireless access as well. With a very simply setup and flawless functionality, I recommend the Time Capsule as the centerpiece of any wireless networking environment.
For relaxing at home after work, the best way to enjoy high definition content is with your Mac. Using two simple adapters, I plug my MacBook Pro into my 32” television and watch full quality, high definition movies without the hassle of BluRay. Because of the Macintosh’s advanced video processing, desktop sharing is as simple as plugging the HDMI cable into the Mini Display port for huge screen computing, for web browsing, YouTube or photo editing, or anything in-between. To turn your Mac into a media center, all you need is an Apple DVI-adapter, and a DVI-HDMI Adapter cable.
My Mac:
I use my Mac at home and at work.
At home, it is my media center. With only 2 adapters, I have my MacBook Pro connected to a 6 speaker stereo system and a 32” LCD Television. With a fast network connection, thousands of songs, and a huge movie library, I have unlimited entertainment at my finger tips. I even use my iPhone as a remote control for the whole system! I also use the MacBook Pro as a hub for my Photography, using Aperture as my photo editing program. Using my long range wireless networking, it’s easy to move about my house and yard with my MacBook Pro for wireless web surfing or for photo editing. It’s battery power is strong enough that the MacBook Pro lasts for long road trips as well.
At work, my machine is a workhorse. It is constantly running everything that I need at all times. Via its Bluetooth, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 ports, I can run scopes and diagnostic software on ailing Macintosh computers. With Server Administation tools, I can make sure that our network of storage locations and NetBoot systems are running properly. I also run our Point of Sales and Inventory application called LightSpeed, which I use to make notes and keep track of open repairs and Apple’s Global Service Exchange. I even run a virtual installation of Windows 7 to stay on top of the latest trends within Microsoft’s OS, because even a Mac tech has to deal with PC’s.
